Excessive Mucous

by Bountyhuntrss, Apr 04, 2007 12:00AM
I've had 2 colds/allergies in the past month and it produces an excessive amount of mucous not only in my nose when I blow it, but I cough mucous up all day. First thing in the morning, it's a greenish color which I understand is just from sitting all night long, but during the day it's very thick and clear, sometimes brownish.  Everyone keeps saying "be careful it doesn't turn into pneumonia".  My question is, when I'm coughing up all this mucous, is it coming from the back of my throat or from my lungs?  It's a little hard to breath sometimes, but not bad and I don't have chest pain.  How do I know if it's just normal with a cold/allergies or if it's pneumonia?

While it is impossible to say for sure, the most likely cause is this drainage is coming from the upper airways.  If you start to run fever, have pain in your chest, difficulty breathing I would strongly recommend seeing your physician.
