Exposure To Asbestos?

by p123, Nov 06, 2006 12:00AM
an incident has been bothering me for a long time
about five years ago my cousins and i were playing hide and seek and my cousin lead me into the roof of my grandmother's then newly built house so it was built in 2001 or so
there was insulation in the roof, but it had a door that opened to the roof in the "attic" so we thought it was safe, there was still a beer bottle in there so one of the workers must have been drinking there.

My concern is that the insulation might have been asbestos, i'm not one hundred percent sure. I've googled some images and it showed that asbestos is white and the insulation i saw was definately yellow and fluffy in texture.. i'm still not very convinced and just want to know the symptoms and the likely hood of me being exposed to it.. i have had asthma since i was very young since i was 2 and lately just this week i've felt like stabbing pains on the left side of my ribs.. am i scaring myself?

i'm 18 and i've got a whole life ahead of me and i don't want to go through it feeling that i only got like 30years to live or anything

Hi, I'm not a doctor but I think you are worrying too much. Certainly where I come from (Australia) asbestos in insulation was banned over 20 years ago. I do not believe it would be used in a house built only 5 years ago in the USA. All insulation is yellow and fluffy in appearance. Asbestesois from inhaling asbestos takes a long time to develop (usually 30 years or so) and you would not be feeling any symptoms now.
Your pain does not sound lung related. More likely to be a pinched nerve, hurt rib, etc. See a doctor but stop worrying, it's bad for your health.

Im sorry to differ but all insulation is not "yellow and fluffy". But hey this is really good news because astbestos comes in white, brown and blue; blue being the most carsogenic. At a guess the yellow fluffy stuff you were exposed to (and sometimes comes as pink fluffy stuff) would most likely be fibreglass insulation. They are finding out it still isn't the best stuff to breathe but nowhere as bad as asbestos.
I too doubt very much you would be experiencing asbestosis but it would make sence to find out what your pain is to ease your mind in this case.
