Fluid Around the Lung

My son has just had surgery to remove apx 2 liters of fluid from around his lung.  The surgeon said there was a mask that covered a part of the lung and had to be removed (similiar to peeling an orange).  After the procedure the lung worked fine but now there is more fluid and lung is only partially working.  Cultures were done and all came back negative.  At the same time that this was going on his platelets level dropped and had to have feresis (diagnosed and treated for TTP several years prior).

What are some of the causes? What can be done to restore and heal the lung?  What can be done to prevent in the future?

This discussion is related to Pleural Effusion problem with lung cavity.
