Good EKG, Chest-xray but PFT test showed problems.

by pkiller, May 17, 2007 12:00AM
I am a 33y/o male - I recently started having problems breathing - it happens while I am rest or while walking or using the treadmill.  There are good days and bad days.  I don't have a cough and am not wheezing.  I describe it as feeling like I need to yawn but can't.  I don't get a good breath and then try unsuccessfully to breath.  When I finally get a good deep full breath it feels good but then it starts all over.

I had a chest x-ray that came back normal.  I had an ekg that came back normal.  I had a pulmonary function test with methacholine challenge.  The methacholine test was fine, no reaction.  They told me that means I don't have asthma.

The PFT showed elevated residual volume consistent with hyperinflation and air trapping and reduced specific airway conductance that is consistent with an obstructive process.

I've been referred to a pulmonologist - am I just wasting my time?  If my chest x-ray came back normal, my ekg came back normal - will I be wasting time and money by going to a pulmonologist based on the PFT?  If not - what is he looking for or what can I expect?  I tried searching on hyperinflation, air trapping and obstrucive process - I came up with COPD which doesn't seem right.  Any advice?
