Hot and cold sweats

I'm not sure whether or not my problem is respiratory. I am a 55 year old woman who has smoked for almost 40 years. I've been having trouble breathing (yes, I know. . a no brainer). But, what is really bad is that I've been getting very hot and sweaty and then I get very, very cold. . am having both hot and cold sweats all day and all night long for the past month or so. I'm just feeling unwell all over. Would you happen to know what might be causing the sweating problem?

Your smoking history, plus trouble breathing, points to your lungs as the site of your problem and, to infection as the cause of your sweats. The recent rapid onset of these symptoms suggests acute infection although chronic lung infection, such as with tuberculosis can sometimes present in an acute fashion.  A month is a long time for such symptoms.  You should see your doctor for examination, a chest X-ray and a complete blood count for starters.  Having trouble breathing would not be a symptom of menopause, yet another cause of sweats.

Good luck
