I HAVE ABPA

by jenn3158, Nov 08, 2009 11:12AM
Hello,
I am a 26 y/o female that suffers from severe asthma since I was a young child.  About 2 yrs ago they was a signficant change in my asthma in which it seeemed to worsen a great deal.  After many trip to the ER I was referred to a lung speacialist.  At the visit he took on listen to my lungs and said "you have the lungs of a 70 y/o" I was not pleased to hear that but greatful he was determined to find out what was going on.  Further testing finally resulted in the diagnosis of ABPA.  Allergic Bronchopulmonary Asperguillsis.  Bascially a fungal infection in my lungs.  I was also suffering from sever bronchecstasis.  So the plan was to go on a high does to Prednisone and Anti-fungal meds for treatment.  WELL,........no on told me the horrible...horrible side effects of this med...and I was on 80mg a day for over 4 months.  I was not even noticable to other I had gained 48 pounds in 3 months.  I wake up in the morning and have new deep red stretch marks on my breast and abdomen.  Finallly treatment ended and I still mantain a very small dose of prednisone with acute attacks and lost most of the weight  but  the effects will always remain on my body and will not go away.  I hate to look at my breast and stomach it looks like someone took a knife and slashed up my skin.  Some stretch marks are so bad that they are 2'' wide and deep. My breast sag as if I was 50 yrs old. I have learned to not wear tops that would even show the top of my breast or a swimsuit that might reveal my stomach but more then that it is very very hard emotionally.   Im so young and so embarrased of my body.  I try to avoid relationiships because I am afraid that a man will never except the way I look.....why should he I havent.  I am writting this because if anyone know possible treatments that might help, or a plastic surgeons that might offer some type of assistance I would be very greatful.  I am young women that does not have many family resources with assistance for plastic surgery and I can't afford to pay for it so I am limited.  Again if anyone can help me in the slightess. I would be greatful and anything big or small....means something very big to me.  Thank you

So sorry to hear it. I too have been a number of times on prednisone for my asthma but not longer then 6 weeks. I'm glad you managed to lose the weight. But I agree, the effects stay with you. Take heart, I have family members who have had bad stretch marks from their pregnancies. Only time will diminish them to a degree. I've heard vitamin E is good for them. But any guy who doesn't love you for who you are is not worth it honey. Just hold your head high and one day when you do have the money and you still want some plastic surgery, then do it.

In the mean time be glad for health. That is something many of us take for granted, but eventually at one point in people's lives they have to face up to health issues. Alas it is sooner for some of us then others.

For now, you must focus on the health of your lungs. My specialist told me that the two most important functioning organs are your lungs and heart. If they aren't working properly, then you have a life of low quality.

Oh and for your breasts....buy some really good bras with underwires. It is amazing what they can do for you. After I had my daughter at 24 year old, my breasts were quite saggy too, due to breast feeding and changing sizes so much during pregnancy. Only 16 year old have perfect breasts, so don't worry about it. :-)
