I can not seem to take a full breath

For the past few days it seems that I can't take a full breath. I had a cold about a week ago but it only lasted about 5 days and never really became serious. I feel like there is a weight on my chest and I have a feeling that I need to yawn all the time but even these are shallow.I am a smoker but only about 2 or 3 a day and for the past week none at all. there is pain in my upper chest I think from trying so hard to take a deep breath, over all I feel fine I am very active  and my energy level has not decreased. This problem has come up all at once any ideas.
