I did not get an answer for question posted on 03/09/04--Pain in one spot.....  Thanks!

Clearly the most important thing that you can do for yourself is to quit smoking and never smoke again!  You may want to look at our Quit Smoking Topic Center at http://www.nationaljewish.org/topic/smoking_cessation.html for ways to quit smoking.  Also check with your doctor for other quit smoking resources in your area.

The pain you describe sounds like pleurisy.  This is inflammation or irritation of the pleura, the sac that holds the lungs.  This can cause pain, which is felt more with deep breathing and coughing.  Thus the chest x-ray might be negative for anything, at least initially.

Since it has been 6 weeks with no improvement you need a repeat chest x-ray to be read by a radiologist or pulmonologist.  To figure out what is wrong with you I would recommend that you see a pulmonologist.  You may need a CT scan and/or a bronchoscopic exam.

Thanks for the answer!  I am currently on Wellbutrin and will be quitting on Monday with the help of a patch as well.  Try #3....hope the third time is the charm.  Ha!  The pain has stopped.  However, I am coughing up really sticky clear "balls" of sputum that have little specks (about the size of a tip of a pen) of yellow or light brown/almost red.  Could this be blood?  Should I wait for a few days after quitting to see if this goes away before I go in for further evaluation?  Thanks again for responding!  Wish me luck on quitting this terrible NASTY habit.....I'll keep you updated on my progress.
