I have a violent cough

I have a violent cough

I have no symptoms prior to the cough but it appears to attack my throat mostly on the right side but sometime on the left.  It feels like something is actually pinching my throat and I immediatly have to cough.  It is almost always followed by several sneezes and coughing and slowly subsides usually within a 1 min.   After the coughing and sneezing my nose is usually clogged but never before the cough.  The cough may appear from 0 to 30 times a day.  It wakes me at night and it is quite violent.

About 4 months ago I had an allergic reaction to medication that resulted in a constant dry cough but this feels different.

Eating dos seem to bring it on especially if the item is dry like toast, crackers, nuts, etc.  I started taking 4 benadryls a day and I thought it helped for the 1st 3 days but now it does not seem to have any effect.  Can this be an allergy?  What direction should I go for treament.  Allergist, ENT?

Thanks

What you have described could be an allergy.  An ENT would be the type of specialist to identify if your cough is due to a sinus problem and the best treatment.  However an allergist would be the type of specialist to identify if your cough is due to allergies as well as a sinus problem and the best treatment.

Thank you for your response, I went to an ENT doctor and he said it was most likely a reflux problem.  I took the medicine he gave me and have not coughed since.
