Infant Sleep Apnea??

by gdpguy, Dec 12, 2001 12:00AM
My 11 month old daughter has not been sleeping through the night for about 3 months.  We have tried everything from making sure she is full before bed to elevating the mattress (pediatrician recommended) etc.  She wakes up about every two hours, usually crying and standing in her crib.  Recently, while rocking her back to sleep I noticed that she stopped breathing and sometimes when she resumes breathing she cries and thrashes around.  I believe this is waking her at night.  After researching infant apnea on the Web, I am still uncertain if infants/children outgrow this condition or if I should be concerned.  Most case senerios were worse that what she is experiencing.  However, in some cases she does not breath for more than 10 seconds.  Also, sometimes she gasps and chokes upon resuming her breathing, but only briefly.  Also, are there long term affects resulting from infant apnea?  Is there anything I should be doing differently and should I be concerned that it may be life threatening?

Thank you very much.

An evaluation at a pediatric sleep center where your daughter could undergo a sleep study to define her sleep patterns may be the most helpful next step. To locate a pediatric sleep center in your area, please check with your local Children’s Hospital.

My daughter was born with sleep apnea and was sent home on a monitor. I am not a doc. but maybe i can help. If you are greatly concerned she may stop breathing for a longer period of time I would suggest learning infant cpr, we had to before we could bring our child home. Also this will not last long our doctor told us that children grow out of it in most cases by thier 2nd or 3rd birthday. In our caases we were somewhat lucky our lil girl grew out of it by the time she was 6months old. Sleep apnea is often common in young children but goes unnoticed often. Well i hope this helps!
