Is Tracheotomy advisable?

by subraveti, Jul 02, 2009 12:11AM
My mother is aged 91 years and is admitted in hospital due to illness. She developed acute Pneumonia and is on Ventilator for the last 3 days.

She is given Morepenem injections to cure Pneumonia. But there is not much improvement.

I am told that Ventilator support cannot be contineous.

My question is, what is the alternate for such a patient. If lungs infection is not getting controlled, she cannot be put
on Ventilator for too long, can Trachea done at this stage. If Ventilator has to be removed, what is the next alternateive as the Oxygen levels are very low.
