Is this normal Tonsil Surgery ?

by eZsean, Jun 30, 2003 12:00AM

My 4-yr old son came out of surgery, into recovery room crying traumatically, is it normal? My heart broke to see him next a pump machine that draw blood from the throat... Post surgery, as for my experience in other surgery, I was sedated enough to sleep thru recovery... But not my son, he woke up crying, and cry till he drop to sleep for 5-10 minutes. And repeat that for couple of hours. Appreciate anyone tell me how the recovery is suppose to be like...  :-{

Between the crying and waking, he could tell there were 2 doctors doing the suction in his throat. The one in white is very painful, and other in blue is not so painful. As he sleep he could not sleeping properly, mumbling and kicking his hands and legs (jerking). He could tell his dad that he vomited blood which he did a few time. He also told me that he was very upset with the doctor.

On 2nd day of his discharged, at home he could told me he was very sadly that the doctor did trying to clear his throat. During the afternoon nap, he again cried uncontrollablly. Then he went back to sleep and woke up half hour later and told me again the doctor in white make it very painful, the other one not so painful. He said the doctor is terrible... Is this normal for a tonsillectomy ???

This sounds like a very upsetting and frightening situation for you.  National Jewish Medical and Research Center does not do surgery.  Therefore we do not have the experience to answer your question.
