I have had a cough for the past 10 days. I smoke 1 pack of cigarettes a day.  I was working tearing walls down in an old house and inhaled a lot of dust.  The next day I began to be short of breath and cough.  A few days later I went to the doctor and he told me that I had bronchitis.  I was given Augmentin and (Vicoclear)-GUAIFENESIN WITH HYDROCODONE.  After 2 days without a change I went to another doctor.  He also told me that it is bronchitis.  He told me to discontinue the Augmentin and put me on Prendnisone and Tequin and the vicoclear when needed.  I have stopped smoking when this first began.  It it is now 5 days later and no change.  I have a non-productive cough day and night.  The cough doesn't stop at night.  I have not had a good night sleep in 10 days.  I get coughing fits that take all of my energy out of me.  I get a headache from all of the coughing.  I do not know what todo next??Any ideas?  Please

I would recommend seeing a Pulmonologist.  It is not clear what has happened.  It may be an irritation in the lungs causing bronchospasm.  It may be an infection.  It may be a foreign particle in the lung.  You may need a chest x-ray and maybe a lung function test.  The most important thing is to find out what is causing the cough and then treat that cause.
