I've been coughing since September

Doctors don't know what it is, so I think that's why they say it's cough variant asthma. I don't think it's that.
My symptoms:
Wheezing (I feel I'm wheezing when I touch my chest. I don't hear any wheezing, but my mom does)
Strong dry cough (brings up mucous, but doesn't totally come out)
Heavy breathing (after walking, I become out of breath)
Constant need of clearing my throat (coughing doesn't help. I feel there's something there, but it never gets cleared)

I can appreciate your doubt regarding the diagnosis of cough variant asthma but what you describe is consistent with that diagnosis and, in that circumstance, you might well benefit from anti-asthma drugs.

That your Mom hears the wheezing suggests that it may be originating in your throat, rather than your lungs.

What you describe suggests that your doctors may be uncertain about your diagnosis, but the bottom line is that any cough that has persisted for more than 9 months really needs to be accurately diagnosed and treated.  I suggest that you and your doctors request consultation with an asthma specialist (Allergist or Pulmonologist), so that you can be relieved of these troublesome symptoms.
