Just can't get better!

by Kristine56, Oct 05, 2008 10:51AM
I've been away for my third year of college for over a month now.  And that's about how long I've been sick for.  First it started out with a phlegm-y cough, but with no real sore throat or any other symptoms.  I went in to the doctor just because it was becoming so disruptive in my classes and such.  I was prescribed medication for acute bronchitus (bronchitis).  I admit that I did not start the antibiotics right away because I was feeling fine other than the cough-and my doctor told me that it didn't seem that serious.  So I tried solving the problem with just cough syrup at nights.

That didn't help so after a few days I started the antibiotic.  After being on the medication for about a week, my symptoms progressed to high fevers, chills, severe achiness, and sore throat along with my cough.  I was also weezing, especially when walking any distance.  I went back to the doctor and told her what was going on.  After listening to my chest and hearing my history, she put me on z-pack medication for pneumonia.  She did not take any chest x-rays (because the x-ray technition wasn't in that day--at school clinic) so she couldn't technically call it pneumonia.

I took the medication, started feeling better, and the following week I was hit with two severe migraines, including nausea.  I do get migraines occasionally but it is quite rare that I get two or more in as short a period as this.  I thought this might just be because the z-pack medication is so strong and intense for just 5 days that my body was getting used to not having it.  As the week ended, I started seeing more symptoms again, including stuffy/runnny nose, difficulty breathing, sore chest, neck and throat extremely sore from coughing so hard, and continuing to spit up dark green clumps of mucus when I cough.
This last weekend I have been feeling worse, getting fevers and chills again so I am heading back to the doctor again tomorrow I hope.

I am just so frustrated that I have been sick for so long and I just feel too drained to do anything.  I typically work out a few times a week and have not felt like I've had the energy or the lung capacity to do any of that.  And I rarely get sick! And I have never smoked so that cannot be related at all.

I have tried taking dayquil/nyquil for cold and flu symptoms, as well as cough syrup, vaporizors--even bought a humidifier a few days ago to try to help.  I have also been alternating motrin and tylenol to cut my fever and achiness.

What's wrong with me??!
