According to the 2008 American College of Chest Physicians Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines the recommendation for people with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary emboli (PE) due to a transient reversible risk factor, such as surgery, is treatment with a vitamin K antagonist (VKA), such as Coumadin® (warfarin) for 3 months, over treatment for shorter periods.

Good luck.
