Liquid O2 vs. compressed gas O2?

My elderly mother is using compressed oxygen at home for COPD but is resisting doc's orders to use a portable dispenser--it's too heavy, lasts less than 2 hours. etc.
A friend with COPD tells me she uses liquid oxygen--it's easier to fill, lighter to carry around, and lasts longer.
Any experience with liquid vs. compressed gas oxygen?  Other advantages and disadvantages?  Insurance issues?  Switching from one to the other?
Also, any comments on mental confusion with lowered oxygen levels?
Grateful for any guidance...
