Lung Biopsy

Lung Biopsy

Back in Sept. my cardioligist sent me for a Calcium Scoring. The radiologist noticed something on the lung. My doctor sent me for a PET scan and here is the finding.

"Scattered bilateral foci are detected in both lung fields. This uptake corresponds to opacities on CT scan. The dominant focus demonstrates a max SUV 3.9 and corresponds to an opacity within the right upper lobe. The radiotracer distribution throughout the remainder of the visualized structures in unremarkable. There are no focal areas of abnormal increased FDG uptake to suggest the presence of a distant metabolically active process."
"Bilateral lung opacities are metabolically active. Inflammatory processes and neoplastic disease are both diagnostic considerations. Tissue sampling may be of additional benefit."

After this report, I went to a Pulmonologist who sent me for a CT scan of Thorax. After reviewing the CT he sent me to a Lung Surgeon who determined a biopsy (arthroscopic) was needed.

I notice that in many other questions people are waiting six months and repeating the CT scan. There has been no change since Sept. I was told by all Dr's that they belive the nodule is benign. Why wouldn't the Drs hold off on the biopsy and redo CT scan in 6 months and address the inflammation now? I am a 54 yr old female in good health and haven't smoked in 30 yrs although I am subjected in 2nd hand smoke.

With the information that you have provided it would be best for you to get an opinion from a pulmonary radiologist.
