Lung Spot and some other stuff

by Jay000, May 08, 2006 12:00AM
I would like to thnk you in advance for taking the time to answer my question. A little while back I started having shortness of breath. Comes and goes, not to bad, sometimes I don't get it for a few days but it is mild when it acts up and no other symptoms. I went to the Pulminoligist and he had me get a chest CT scan and put me on Advair. The CT showed a 5mm spot on my lung as well as a swollen gland in my armpit area, the gland measured 1.4 cm. I am 40 yr old male and a former smoker, I smoked for 18 yrs.The pulmonoligist says it it not cancer but he will have a few more CT scans done to make sure. Also I have chronic sinusitis with all the symptoms including sometimes heavy nasal drip. I also have neck glands that have been swollen for several months and have had them cat scanned twice. The ENT says they are not cancerous because they have shrunk somewhat on the second scan. So basicaly my question is do you think the 5mm spot on my lung could be cancer, does my breathing issue sound like asthma and can my sinus issues have anything to do with my breathing issues or possibly even the spot on my lung.

The 5 mm spot on your lung could be cancer but the majority of nodules this size are benign.  The best approach is to follow this spot with repeat CT scans.  It probably has nothing to do with your shortness of breath.

There are many causes of shortness of breath and asthma is one of them.  Perhaps your doctor heard wheezes.  You should ask him/her.  COPD, from cigarette smoking, is another cause.  So are clots to the lung.

If all your lymph nodes, including the large one in your armpit, are shrinking it would be appropriate to continue to observe them.  But, if there is any doubt or if one enlarges or if others develop, you should have a lymph node biopsy.

To: Forgot a few things
I forgot to mention that the breathing test that the Pulminoligist did was perfect even though I smoked all those years and that I have suffered from allergies, sinis infections and tonsilitis my whole life. Again thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

I'm sorry just one more thing.... the glands in my neck that are swollen are the ones under my jaw. Thanks

The 5 mm pleural based nodule seen on my first ct scan dissapeared on the second ct scan two months later. Hopefuly some of you who are worrying like I was find this information encouraging. God Bless and remember that Jesus Loves us and hears our prayers!
