Lung spots-1 growing

When my husband had a CT scan of his pelvic area, they discovered he had a small spot on his kidney and a small spot on his right lung.  Further testing helped them to determine, to the best of their knowledge, that the kidney spot was most likely a harmless sisk.  After waiting for 6 months, another CT scan of his lungs confirmed 2 spots. The first one found did not seem to be growing.  After a few months, tests confirmed that it is still growing and is located on the upper section of the right lung on the outside area.  A P.E.T. test was done on him.  It did not show it to be cancer.  All results were negative.  What could we be looking at here?  The doctor suggested waiting 3 months and then doing another CT scan.  He had  a steph infection last year.  He carries a cell phone on his chest pocket of his overalls.  Can you give me an idea of what comes next, etc.?
