Mucus in throat

I have had a mucus problem for years now and sometimes it feels like I can't even breathe. It is so embarrassing in class when I feel like I can't breathe because of the mucus, and I don't want to disrupt the class by caughing so i hold it in and clear it out in between periods. I take allergy medicine every day but thats not working and i don't know what to do. any suggestions?
