Mycoplasma & Chlamydia Treatment not working?

by andydandy, May 15, 2007 12:00AM
As a result of bronchitis yrs ago I have needed an inhaler..last one was Advair 500...only used once a day.  Never needed a rescue inhaler.  In December, durung a very stressfull year, I had 2 URI's then found inhaler wasn't doing the job. Referred to pulminoligist:  Blood work showed the above and due to a 3rd URI he placed me on azithromax, doxycyline, Biaxin & Levequin + a shot of prednisone + a shot of one of the antibiotic's & prescriptionfor laddered prednisone.  Levaquin almost killed me but I stayed with it for the 10 days and biaxin caused rash so I stopped after several weeks but stayed on the others. I was better but still very congested. Wham..another URI.  Refused Levaquin & Cipro so he prescribed Augmentin...got better but still terribly congested, and spitting. Wham again..another URI!  Each time when I get them I can't breathe at all.  This time I thought I best take the Levaquin & he prescribed Augmentin too, along with the staples, Azithromycin and Doxy and more ladderted prednisone. 10 days later barely a little better..he extended the Levaquin another 30 days. Finally I had to go somewhere important..I stopped the Levaquin after 24 pills..at least now I don't feel like I am dying from the flu! Then I started throwing up from the Augmentin so I have stopped that..still on the others.  Don't see my Dr until the first week in June.  He was always going to do function tests when I got clear but that hasn't happened. Coughing & spitting & wheezing...sleep in chair half of the time. Is this the story of the rest of my life..I am 68..was still working..now taken a leave to try and get well. Dr says keep taking pills...how does he know there isn't something more serious going on?  I am weaker and in many ways worse than when this started...I didn't even have a cough then. Forgot to say: in January he said blood work said my immune system was ok. Please head me in the right direction. A second opinion?  Someone suggested I go over to Ohio State University' s hospital pulminary care...they thought they had a walk in clinic but no...must make an app.  Help...what to do?

You will need X-rays, maybe a CT scan of the lungs, and more blood work to check your immune system.  You may also need a bronchoscopy.  If your current doctor cannot see you before early June, you should seek consultation with another pulmonary doctor or an infectious disease specialist.  You should not wait until June.
