Nausea and other symptoms

by clay01, Oct 16, 2003 12:00AM
I am 29 years old and have been experiencing very strange light headedness. I all of a sudden feel a peculiar head rush and a difficulty breathing. I have had an echo cardiogram which seems to have been normal. However I also wake up, some times many times a night, with a sensation that begins in my chest and moves through my head very quickly and seems to take my breath away. It feels as if I am going to lose complete consiousness at times.I was prescribed Xanex to see if the attacks were anxiety related. They do not help with the situation. I am searching for any possible relations to what may cause symptoms such as this. I alos get numbness at times in my arms, pains in my deltiods, and muscle twitches in my arms, shoulders chest and torso.

These symptoms could be due to more than one problem.  Work with your doctor to find the cause of your symptoms.

The way your symptoms present and the numbness you describe suggest hyperventilation, sometimes called panic attack.  With this problem the breathing gets faster, the carbon dioxide level decreases, and all the symptoms that you describe follow.

Waking many times a night with a sensation that begins in your chest certainly suggests a breathing problem.  A pulmonologist would be the type of specialist to identify if this is due to a problem with your breathing and the best treatment.

I agree with Ozark. Also, you can telephone the LUNG LINE and ask a nurse about what might be causing your symptoms, by calling 1-800-222-LUNG(5864).

Also, ask your doctor about THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME, which is one (of several conditions) that can cause symptoms like you've mentioned. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is treatable, starting with (at least) improving your "ergonomics" (how you use your arms, and body, at work, etc.). The kind of doctor who usually can diagnose Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, is a Vascular Surgeon. You might also want to see a Neurologist, too.

Sincerely, concerned lady
