Need Help Arranging for Oxygen in Europe

by obie1, Feb 27, 2005 12:00AM
We are planning a trip to Munich, Germany in September, 2005. What should be a simple matter has turned into a mystery that I need help in solving.
I have COPD and use supplementary oxygen for flying, at higher altitudes and when I exercise or even walk for any real distance. I arrange for oxygen when flying via the airline. Where I need help is when I arrive in Munich. I will use my portable concentrator in the rental car and in hotels but still need some cylinders of oxygen for when walking about, etc.
I have asked my pulmonologist, my oxygen provider, every on-line resource I can think of, including the US Consulate, and have thus far been unable to find out how to arrange for renting 10 M-6 or equivalent cylinders of oxygen and a conserving regulator that I would pick up in the Munich area on 3 September and return on 16 September. I can't be the first US citizen to travel to Germany that needed to arrange for supplementary oxygen. I am hopeful that you can help direct. Thank you.

I am sorry you are having so much difficulty! Try this website: http://www.travelo2.com/main.html
I would also call the American Lung Association at 1-800-LUNG-USA (1-800-586-4872). Two large Oxygen Equipment suppliers, Lincare or Apria might have agencies in Munich or might be able to refer you to a competitor. You may try checking with your airline.
Finally, any good travel agent should have information.

I am on O2 at night only, and am traveling to Francea and  England the end of April.  My O2 company was of zero help.  The insurance company was no help.  I googled it and got some lukewarm leads.  But the best so far was when I thought to call the American Lung Association.  I forget what the name of the outfit is , but the Am LUng poeple will give you the number for the company.  It might take a while to get a response from them as they are so busy, but the guy I talked to was EXTREMELY knowledgeable about traveling with O2 in Europe.  I wish I had thought of it earlier, as it would've saved me a lot of time. And I am sorry that I don't have the phone number handy for the lung assoc either, but google it and you will find it.  Good luck!!!!
