My father is suffering from a non-resolving pneumonia among other things if we are to believe them. He had Pneumonia in April and traveled to Greece in June against Dr's orders) He was short of breathBreath alcohol test Breath holding spell Breath odor one day in late July and he went to get checked whereby they immediately admitted him into the hospital and that's where he has been ever since. They have performed I believe, three bronchoscopyBronchoscopy Bronchoscopy with transbronchial biopsy's in total and one came back with a positive result for Adinocarcinoma. Nothing at all conclusive. We put a stop to the VATS they wanted to perfom. They can't find any reason why he is saturating at such a low level and it's taken them a month to come back with the idea that perhaps he has adinocarcinoma. They have also taken several x-rays and catscans and they seem to getting nowhere. It's as if they just want to keep taking these tests but they get very littleLittle noses decongestant Little tummys if no results from them. The hospital conditions are poor to say the least. It is taking a very long time to get things done. The resources are very poor and there seems to be no urgency about anything. We risk his condition getting worse and we are stongly advised by the dr's here in the U.S. to get him home to the U.S. which we are planning to do but want to hire a dr. to travel with him. He is on oxygen 24/7 and uses a venti mask. Will likely also have a non re-breather as back up. He is taking in 15 liters of oxygen but it is being suggested that it could be the worst thing they could be doing. He is oxygenating at 88/89 while up and about and at 90/91 while at rest. On Oxygen the entire time. He eats very well, takes his shower every morning, has good color and even sounds good most of the time although there are days you can hear the labored breathing quite clearly. Should we or shouldn't we fly him home? Please, any answers will be helpful.
We obviously have more faith in the U.S. Hosptial system. This trip is planned for late in the week of 9/10 or early the week of the 17th of September, 2007. Please e-mail me for additional details or any adivce that any of you might have - please.
I am sorry that you are placed in this situation. How old is your father? What medical history does he have? I don't think he, frankly, would be allowed on a routine Delta flight. Anyone who requires 15 lpm and still only having sats of 91 as a high, would be considered too critical, IMO. I googled international medical flights and there were a number of links that came up. You are probably going to have to pay a lot of money to get him back to the States, but I understand how you would have more faith in the US medical system. Why did you stop the VATS? It likely would've provided a definitive answer. Does he have anyone there with him? All I can do is wish you good luck.
