No cough - sudden onset bronchitis

I had a sudden onset of breathing difficulty - mainly difficulty exhaling. No cough. Tests ( CT Scan) showed mild chronic bronchitis. I'm confused - how can something chronic come as a sudden onset? How come there's no cough - just a thickening of the bronchus? I'm a non smoker

A chronic disease need not be active at all times.  A good example of this is asthma that for most people causes episodes of difficulty breathing, separated by long intervals when breathing feels and/or actually is normal.  Most bronchitis in non-smoker is caused by virus infection and usually is limited to 10-14 days.  What you describe does not sound too serious but, until it resolves, you may benefit from medication to keep your bronchial tubes open.  If this problem does not quickly resolve, you and your doctor should do further testing to determine if another disease is causing your shortness of breath.  If that happens, a breathing test (Spirometry) might help establish a diagnosis.

Good luck
