Occasionally not using CPAP

by miker, Feb 18, 2003 12:00AM
I suffer from severe sleep apnea, but have been much helped by a CPAP device, which I use consistently. My question: What would be the medical implications if my personal circumstances meant that I couldn't use the CPAP device at least one night a week, and occasionally three nights in a row? Thanks much.

With sleep apnea breathing stops during sleep for up to a minute at a time and up to several hundred times a night.  This can cause you to feel quite sleepy during the day.  The most common and effective treatment is the use of a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.  This is a machine that is used during sleep to deliver air pressure into the lungs to keep the airways open.

There are no long-term medical implications of not using the CPAP device for one night a week or three nights in a row.  The only short-term medical implication would be disrupted sleep, with the desire to sleep the next day.
