Pain in lungs and sleep prevention

by adtrade1, Oct 31, 2006 12:00AM
In the last two months I am having very disturbed sleep, which includes waking frequently but more inportantly I am having pains in my lungs which I am worried about. The pains occur about 4-5 nights out of the week but once I am up the pain completely goes away.

I have always been a bad sleeper, but would like to know why the pains are occuring.

I smoke about 40 cigerates a day, am of normal weight and suffer from stress if this helps with your diagnosis.

I would be grateful if you could suggest what I am suffering from.

Thank you.

The lungs are usually not a cause of pain.  What you describe sounds more like the pain of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).  This is the back flow of stomach contents, including digestive juices, into the esophagus or food tube.  It is most commonly called acid reflux or heartburn.

Everyone in the United States has free access to telephonic counseling for quitting tobacco at Quitline (800) QUIT NOW.  You may want to look at our giving up smoking information at http://www.nationaljewish.org/disease-info/wellness/smoking/index.aspx for ways to help you quit smoking.  Also check with your doctor for other quit smoking resources in your area.

Sounds like chronic bronchitis. Stop smoking.
