Pain in the air way to the right lung while taking a deep breath

by niks, Mar 10, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 35-year old male; about 15 years back I had a sudden elevation in my BP and followed by fatigue everyday. Since then I had sinus infection gradually developed to Postnasal drip and finally allergy. I have done extensive blood and urine tests, everything normal.
Now my main problem is my right throat irritated for the last 10 years. Took antibiotics several times, but no use. I have pain in somewhere in airway to the right lung when I take a deep breath. Feel like mucus membrane is damaged (dry feeling) in my lower right throat. I have recurrent pin in between my right shoulder blade and the spine. Two yrs back I did sinus and thorax CT and all normal except mucus thickening in maxillary sinus. Recently I had a 45-degree endoscope and doctor prescribed medicines for acid reflux but I don’t think that is my main problem. I never had a bronchoscope.

My other symptoms are fatigue, pain in my shoulders, numbness on my palm, elevated BP, palpitation, headache, unexplained back pain, dry eyes, blocked right nose, dry cough recently started. Etc. No one could diagnose my exact problem.  Now it’s affecting my family life because I am always thinking about my condition and gloomy.  Any advise highly appreciated.

Many of your symptoms, but not your throat pain, could be due to a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).  OSA is a condition in which the airway does not fully open during sleep.  This can happen whenever there is a physical obstruction, such as the collapsing of a large airway or the tongue falling back to block the throat and narrow the airway.  This causes breathing to stop for 10 seconds or more while sleeping.  This may happen several hundred times a night.  Each time this happens it is an episode of apnea.  This could cause you to feel quite fatigued during the day.  It is possible that you are aware of this because you wake yourself up gasping for air.  Snoring is what often alerts people to the problem.  You should definitely have a sleep study in a sleep lab.  Please read our obstructive sleep apnea information at http://www.nationaljewish.org/disease-info/diseases/sleep/treatments/obstructive-apnea.aspx to learn more.

The pain between your right shoulder and spine could be referred pain from your gall bladder.  It could also be on the basis of nerve compression and/or irritation, such as could be seen with brachial plexus problems, intercostal neuritis or nerve root compression due to intervertebral disc disease.

Also you should probably have a bronchoscopy.

Have you been evaluated for Ankylosing Spondylitis? How about Reactive Arthritis (also known as Reiter's Disease)? Both of these can affect the airways, are most common in young men, and fit many of your symptoms. Both are autoimmune, and are treatable to an extent, relieving many symptoms. Have you had an autoimmune panel of blood tests run? Have you seen a rheumatologist? Don't spend time worrying. Get up and do soomething to help yourself. You are the one person in the world who cares most how you feel. It is your responsibility to be proactive, and make sure that you push your Dr. to do what you need. Dr.'s are only human too.

I would bet my life that you took Accutane (for recalcitrant cystic acne) sometime in your past.  Did you take it 15 years ago? The public is generally unaware of the difficulties of Accutane's LATENT side effects, setting in YEARS after ingestion.  You can look at some of my other posts here.  I'vs spotted one victim already.  For some help from people who are aware of what Accutane has done to them, go to ACCUTANE ROACCUTANE ACTION GROUP FORUM.  You will be flabbergasted.
