Paralyzed left Diaphragm

by ss803, Jul 05, 2009 09:18PM
In August of 2008, I had a 500 gram benign teratoma tumor removed from the center of my chest.  The left phrenic nerve was involved in the tumor and a portion was removed.  As a result, my left lung is paralyzed.  I am 53 and use to walk or run 3 miles every other day.  Now I have trouble walking up one floor of stairs.  Most other activities have also been restricted.  My lung capacity is 60% of normal.  I found a doctor at MUSC in Charleston, SC that has performed 7 diaphragm plication surgeries and I may have the surgery in late August 2009.  Because of scar tissue from the first surgery, the doctor will use a lateral thoracotomy to access the lung.  I thought the first surgery (sternectomy) was bad but I understand this could be worse.  I am hoping I could find someone that has had the surgery.  I would like to know what kind of improvement people have and some more about the feeling of tightness people report having.  Specifically, is the tightness something you get use to and ignore or is it a constant problem.  I would appreciate any information about what to expect.

Thanks,
Steve
