Pet scan came back suspicion of cancer

I had a chest xray done and they said there was something in my lung.  So the doctor put me on anitbiotics and redid the chest xray.  Still there so they did a cat scan and they did a Pet scan.  Now the doctor said the pet scan result came back suspicion of cancer.  Now he wants to do a needle biopsy.  Has anyone else had a pet scan and it came back not sure.  I thought that the pet scan was supposed to show if you have cancer or not.  Thanks for any help.

Thank you all for the insight!
I have a mass on my lung which put me in the hospital through the Holidays (12 days).
Pet/scan, needle into my back, CT/scan and so many x-rays I cant count...they still do not know what it is? All I know is that I am really tired all the time? I dont smoke, in fact I was a competitive triathlete until I got hit by a cab, on my bike, severally damaged my neck and several broken bones later  i still like to exercise i.e. health nut. So what is this "Mass" in my lung? Granduloma? Cancer? They have ruled out most everything else. Suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

I am waiting for them to schedule a needle biopsy.  The doctor that is doing it has to get it set up with the hosptial.  Probably will be this week.  They said that it came back not sure.  It is in my left upper lung.  I have had many pnemonias in the past.  I have COPD.  They said they will find out fast after the biopsy.  Just have been worried.  Thanks for talking to me.

PET scans can give false results in some cases. Have you talked to your doctor about Bronchoscopy to get a biopsy?
I have had bronchoscopy and needle biopsy, for a suspicious looking shadow on my lung - The bronchoscope couldn't reach it to biopsy the region, So I had to have a needle procedure done.
I found it okay, but I bled a bit and had to stay in hospital a couple of days after.  The area was quite sore for a couple of weeks but it didn't stop me doing anything more like a muscle ache.  It turned out I had a Granuloma and was diagnosed as having Pulmonary Sarcoidosis, which is now in full remission.

I was told by my GP only after the diagnosis that they feared lung cancer, but thankfully, ( although it was at the back of my mind ) no-one suggested this strongly whilst I was getting all the tests. Hopefully you will have a good outcome.

all the best

Hi, I had a friends husband go through the same thing. I know they went in and biopsied the lump and it came back negative, they however couldn't remove the lump because it was attach to something ( I would have to ask her again) So they said the part they biopsied was negative, but they wanted him to go back for another pet and he wouldn't do it. He's very stubborn. That was 4 years ago, and he's hasn't had any problems. When do you go back to the dr? I've been in similar situation, just not with the lung, and thank goodness everything turned out ok. It is a very trying time to go through the wait and worry.
