Phlem in throat

by phoenixia08, Mar 18, 2008 08:48PM
I am 50, I look very healthy and can easily pass for a sound 30+. My height is 5' 10" with a weight of about 84kg. Though I am athletic in build, I do not engage in any form of exercise.

I have had this disturbing phlem build up in my throat since I was about 12. Without any treatment then it kind of cleared out in my late teens only to re-surface in the last two years, getting so bad now that I feel I will choke on it sometimes. I find it as difficult to cough out as it is to swallow it that persons around me can hear me struggling to swallow the phlem in my sleep.

In addition, I snore heavily irrespective of my posture (i.e. whether lying or sitting down) at the time of sleeping. My wife even said I have presented with shortness of breath. I have not been treated at all for this ailment and I am a bit skeptical about self-medication. My GP does not seem bothered at all. A doctor friend even suggested it could be psychological! I do need help, can someone talk to me..please?

I wonder if this is post  nasal drip...especially since this happens with sleep. The other thing I can think of is reflux disease which can cause shortness of breath even asthma symptoms. These two ailments come to mind when I read your post...I hate it when docs are quick to chalk things up to being psychological!!!! Ask your doc about post nasal drip/ reflux disease (GERD)...there are treatments for those. HOpe this helps..Sunny
