I have been told I have a low soft palate that may be contributing to my sleep apnea, and indeed I can see what they mean. A couple of questions: can this change over time; the back of my throat looks quite different from what I remember when I was younger. If in fact the soft palate can get lower over time, what causes that? Finally, would losing weight change the situation at all? Thanks.

The soft palate can vary with time including the distance it hangs down. If you are obese, losing weight could alter the size of your palate and open your throat more. Be wary of any proposal to surgically alter your palate. Any surgery to enlarge your throat should be approached with much caution. Consider only a surgeon with a great deal of experience. This surgeon should agree to provide documentation of his/her outcomes and be willing to put you in touch with people who have had the surgery done by him/her so that you might get first hand information from them.
