Respiration Problem

Hi
When I wake up in the morning today some acidic liquid came to my mouth from my Stomach and all of sudden I couldn't not breathe at all for about one minute. There was no pain but I felt like someone is choking my air pipe. I couldn't not brearhe even a trace for about one minute though I was struggling to do so.  Afterward The air pipe opened slowly and I could breathe. Now I am fine, there is no breathing problem but I am still scared and feel like I am tired. Still i can feel something "khis khis" in my throat.
Same thing happened twice before. Once When I was driving from my friend's house all off a sudden I could not breathe for a short duration and later it was okay. Another time when I was eating dinner with my family I felt uneasy in my throat and started to cough then all of sudden I could not breathe but slowly it became okay. Actually I didn't care about the previous incidents but I am too much scared due to What I suuffered in the morning today. If any one could help me about this that wiil be highly appreciated.

It is certainly a very scary experience when you are not able to breathe.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the back flow of stomach contents, including digestive juices, into the esophagus or food tube.  This is most commonly called acid reflux or heartburn.  This reflux can come all the way up into the mouth and nose.  When this happens the material can be aspirated, dribbling into the windpipe and lungs.  Your symptoms could be due to this.

Please read our Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease MedFact at http://www.nationaljewish.org/medfacts/reflux.html for more information.  You will need to check with your doctor to know for sure what is causing your symptoms.  It

What you described sounds like it may have been a laryngospasm (closing up of the vocal cords), due to a gastric reflux episode. This laryngospasm (closing-up spasm of some part of the larynx/voice box, like the vocal cords) is also called VCD (Vocal Cord Dysfunction).

You can telephone the LUNG LINE, at 1-800-222-LUNG(5864), and ask the LUNG LINE nurse about whether you could be seen at Nat'l Jewish Medical & Research Center, in Denver, Colorado. Nat'l Jewish is EXPERT at diagnosing VCD, and other respiratory conditions.

If you can't be seen at Nat'l Jewish, the LUNG LINE nurse may be able to recommend knowledgable doctors in your area, who can help you find out for sure what happened to you.

If you have any breathing problems, you can call for an ambulance, or, go to an ER (Emergency Room), just in case something dangerous is happening, such as a severe allergic reaction, etc. Once you get correctly diagnosed, by good doctors, there will be choices of treatments, to improve your breathing, and, to prevent these breathing problems from happening in the future.

My husband and I highly recommend Nat'l Jewish, from our own personal experiences of being diagnosed with VCD, at Nat'l Jewish. They are kind, knowledgable, and helpful! I recommend that you call them!

Good luck to you.

Sincerely,
Concerned lady
