Scar tissue in Lungs

12 years ago my mother had pneumonia and has suffered from respiratory problems ever since.  Nothing life threatening, but irritating (cough, plem, constant throat clearing, voice loss, ect.).  She was given a CT about 6 months ago and was told she had some scar tissue  (some leisions and nodules), she was recently given another CT and was told there is now more scar tissue - not a massive amount but a slight elevation.  What is this caused by?  She was never a smoker or exposed to any of the things that cause Pulimnary Fibrosis.  She has no trouble breathing, working out and will sometimes go for a day or two without any coughing jags before it comes back.  She is now 65 and is worried about this recent finding.
