Sharp pain when I breath

by Becky21270, Feb 03, 2009 01:06PM
A few hours ago I noticed a sharp pain when I take a deep breath.  The pain is on my left side.  It is sharp pain in my back going through to my chest.  It hurts all of the way through.  It has gotten worse the last few hours but I am not in chronic pain.  It hurts worse when I take a deep breath.  What are the symptoms consistent with? I am trying to decide if I should go to doctor.

This sounds very much like pleurisy or pain that mimics pleurisy, such as a pinched nerve.  Such pain can be caused by viral or bacterial infection, by clots to the lung or by an injury to the chest wall, such as a fractured rib that can occur, sometimes, with just one hard cough.  Bottom line, given the possibility that this could be the first sign of a serious problem, you should definitely go to your doctor or the nearest emergency room (ER) for an examination and a chest x-ray.

Good luck.
