Should I see a doctor.

I really hate going to the doctor because normally they say nothing is wrong however I am looking for some opinions.  I have had a cough for 2 weeks now.  Several hours after waking I have a coughing fit where I have alot of phlegm coming from deep in side my chest where I actually almost vomit I am trying so hard to get it out or it is stuck (I sound like smokers cough but I do not smoke).  Then I am fine for several hours.  Sometimes when I eat it gets irritated and I start coughing up the phlegm again.  At night I will get the dry coughing fits.  Just when I think I am getting better such as having one night free of coughs the next night I will cough alot again.  My lower chest does feel sore but probably because of coughing.  Phlegm is usually yellowish in the morning.  Any ideas what it could be and when I should contact the doctor.  No other cold or flu symptoms.

The most common cause of your cough would be an upper respiratory infection.  Along with this you may or may not have bronchitis or sinusitis.  A cough with yellow phlegm that has lasted 2 weeks suggests bronchitis or pneumonia.  You may have felt worse before you started to get better.

After 3 weeks of having this cough if your condition has worsened at any time or is not definitely showing signs of improving, you should see a doctor and should have a chest x-ray.
