Sinusitis or tonsilitis?

by MandaSue, Oct 26, 2001 12:00AM
Last November I had mono and had horrible swelling of the tonsils. Ever since my tonsils swell what seems to be every other week.  They also seem to be slightly scarred. My throat has not hurt until resently.  Also throughout the summer I would have whitish bumps on my right tonsil.  I've been sick now for three weeks and my symptoms are headaches, sore throat, slight cough, pressure in ears, and overall tired-drained feeling.  My tonsils don't look bad, but there is a real uncomfortable tightness in my throat.  My doctor said it was a sinus infection but wants an ear, nose, and throat doctor to take a look for a second opinion.  Does this sound like just a sinus infection or should I be thinking about the posibility of tonsilitis?

It is difficult to tell from what you described whether this is a case of sinusitis and/or tonsillitis. It is possible to have a sinus infection and have all the symptoms you described. These can be chronic in nature or even come and go away. The best way to make a diagnosis of sinusitis is with a sinus x-ray or CT scan.
It sounds like the Mono in November also changed the way your tonsils are functioning. It is possible that you have been harboring an infection in your tonsils, which could also give you the same type of symptoms. It is an excellent idea to have an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist evaluate the problem and get to the source.
Good luck

About 2 weeks ago i developed terrible sinus, i couldn't breathe through my nose and my nostrils were really sore if i tried to blow my nose, then that sort of disappeared and then the sides of my neck(glands)blew up like balloons, and so did the glands under my jaw line and throat, now i am at the stage where it's very painful to swallow and the infection seems to have spread to my tonsils.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Recently my throat has really been bothering me. It feels really swollen and it is extrmely painful to swallow, even small things like jelly beans and even liquids. I tried throat sprays but it feels like the spray isn't reaching back far enough in my thtroat and throat drops don't help at all. Brothers and uncles have a history of sinustis and tonsilitis. Is this a problem or could it be from screaming too much.
