The decision to take out the tonsils can be made at any time.  In many, where the tonsils are not causing a major problem and they are not blocking the airway when they swell, surgeons generally watch the tonsils through puberty to see if they shrink down enough to not be a bother any more.  In all people tonsils get smaller as you go through your teens.  If, however, the tonsils are a threat to the airway or they are a constant source of infections, the decision to take them out can be made at any time.

The reasons to take out or leave the tonsils alone are issues that you and your parents can talk about with your doctor.
