TROUBLE BREATHING-YAWNING

by Artcos, May 21, 2009 10:16PM
ALL-I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FROM SHORTNESS OF BREATH AND THE ONLY WAY TO GET A BREATH OF AIR IS TO YAWN...?? So..i went to the ER because I thought something was seriously wrong only to find out I had a lung infection.  I was thrilled to know what was wrong with me, thinking that this disorder would go away....I was wrong. After the infection cleared, I still couldn't breath properly. Fed up...i searched deep for more answers and it turns out it was anxiety.  I didn't even know what it was, until I did more research and found out it affects so many things including breathing.  I have read "PANIC AWAY" by Joe Barry and it has really calmed me down, this book generally discussed anxiety but there is a chapter on breathing and this is what changed me.  I hope this helps as I know this condition is HELL and it still unbelievable to think Doctor's can't help!!

I feel relief that I am not alone in suffering with yawning and shortness of breath.  My first episode was a few months ago and I thought I was just tired, but then realized that I truly was having difficulty catching my breath.  The only thing that helped was a big yawn.  It is a bit disappointing in reading all the posts on this subject that doctors cannot seem to diagnose the root cause nor provide an effective treatment plan.  I read a post about salt helping the problem, but I'm on meds for high BP, so that is probably not a good idea for me.  Does anyone have any new insight on this issue?

My son is 7 years old and has had this problem for 3 months.  I have taken him to the doctor three different occastions.  He's been treated with asthma meds, had EKG and chest xray and everything is fine.  The doctors told me it might be a "tic", I thought that was crazy...He is not under any stress so I can't believe it could be anxiety.I am really glad to hear other people go through this bc the doctors think i am crazy.  I don't understand why such a young child would be going through this...I am really worried.

Reading this is really comforting on one hand, to not feel like I'm going CRAZY!  But concerning on the other hand, that there don't appear to be many answers.  I did read the other post about salt, and that's interesting...in general I have had low to normal BP.

As I type I am trying to "catch a yawn" without much success.  My jaw hurts from trying so hard and my ribs as well.  I have had this happen before, and it eventually went away.  This bout has lasted about 7 days now.  I find going outside for fresh crisp air helps, as does yoga breath.  I tend to find it worse in the afternoon.  But releif doesn't last long, another yawning bout starts soon after.

Anxiety is a strong connection I'm wondering about - but to be honest, I'm not sure.  Time for a doc's appointment I guess...and by the time I get in, the symptoms will probably be gone.  Anyone else had some answers from the medical community?

Just wondering if any of you have degenerative disc disease?  I do and I have the yawning problem.  My thought has been that there is inflammation in my muscles causing pressure on my lungs.  I have lots of back pain.
On a different cause - have many of you gotten relief from acid reflux meds?  I'm going to try that next.
I don't have symptoms; am not over weight - but can't hurt to give it a try.

That's interesting about the spine connection, but no I don't think I have that.  But on the acid reflux note, yes I have been feeling "that way" as well and took some regular rolaid type thing the other night and that did help a bit.  I am thinking now it is possibly related to my B12 levels, which I've had issues with in the past.  Booked in to see a naturopath in a week so I hope to get some help then.  In meantime, I'm avoidining caffeine and trying to take it a little easier.
