Throat ulcers after antibiotics

by floridamike, May 25, 2004 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with sinus infection and put on AugmentinXR-1000-62.5, 2 tabs twice a day. After second day severe throat ulcers appeared. Could the antibiotic cause these? If so what can I do for them since I need to stay on meds for another 7 days? And why such a mega dose antibiotic? I've been treated for sinus infection before with amoxicillin 250mg 4 times per day. I'm new to Florida. Are sinus infections harder to treat here then Western PA?

Please let your doctor know about your severe throat ulcers.  This could be a side effect of the Augmentin® (amoxicillin and clavulanate).  Your doctor may have you switch to another antibiotic.  Augmentin® (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is a good medicine for a sinus infection.  Sometimes it helps more than amoxicillin, especially when the sinus infection is recurrent.

Please ask your doctor and inform him/her about your new symtpoms.  S/he will be able to make recommendations on any appropriate changes to your treatment.  Your pharmacist might also be able to help & let you know whether this is a common side effect of this treatment.  Good luck!
