Tonsil Removal?

by Serial32, Feb 16, 2007 12:00AM
Hi, I'm 18 years old.  I've had lot's of strep throat and sore throats ever sence I was little. For the past couple of years I have had white things in my throat and holes.  I did some research here on the forums and such and came to the conclusion that they are tonsil stones or whatever just from food caught in the holes.  The one doctor that i recently saw also said it was normal and I probably just have another infection(because of sore throat and swollen neck). My strep came back negative.  Within the last 2 or 3 years all my strep tests have come back negative.  I requested that my tonsils be taken out and got a referal to an ENT specialist but haven't made an apointment yet. The doctor that I saw said that they would most likely deny me the request of taking my tonsils out because you have to have 4-6 positive strep tests within 6 months to a year. I'm sick of the continuous sore throats and the feeling of pop corn kernels stuck in my throat.  Was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or information for me on what to do.

I am afraid you are stuck.,  You cannot take antibiotics all the time.  The ENT is not going to take out the tonsils.  It is possible that your tonsils will become less of a problem as you get older.  For now, I would suggest treating infections as they occur as the best option.

I had the exact same problem when I was younger (I'm 38 now).  Since having my tonsils removed at 14, I have not had one incidence of strep throat.  I was getting it many times a year.  I was told that the bacteria can get caught underneath enlarged tonsils and it just never goes away.

That said, you're the patient and you're paying the doctor to provide a service.  Interview a few doctors until you find one who will do the procedure.  I'm sure you'll be glad you did.  If you can't find an ENT who will help you, consider going straight to a surgeon.
