Too much fluid drainage is causing a skin infection-need help

by emtdgirl, Aug 27, 2008 12:12PM
I take care of my husbands grandmother who is in teh end satges of heart failure, but still doing fair for her condition. The problem is, she has excessive drainage in one leg that has now caused skin damage and possibly an infection. I say this beacues her doctors nor teh Hospice nurses/doctors hav eno ide what to do about it or can they get it under control. I am a CNA of more than 10 yrs as well as an EMT and am ususlay not clueless about stuff like this, but we are at our wits end. At 1st they were using calcium absorption pads, now they are trying a spongy type bangade with about an inch of thick padding. None of these are working. She has continous yellow drainage and some minor bleeding at times from the irritated skin. I can place 4 abdominal pads wrapped in gauze on the lower 10 inches or so of her lower leg and in about 4 hrs-usualy less, it has already soaked through and through and left a puddle in the floor. Is there some sort of bandage that is better than can wick away the moisture better and keep the area a little dyer. We know she's not going to heal completely by any means, but we are trying to keep it dry so that it doesn't get any worse. I have taken care of many with "weeping" legs, but this is by far teh absolute worst case I have ever seen. She has been on multiple antibiotics-none of which have worked. Among her others meds, she takes 40 lasix in teh Am and another 40 at lunch. On top of that, her Doc wants to eventulay get her to 80 in teh am and 80 in teh pm which is crazy. She tried taking teh full 80 before at one time and she was delerious, had a lowered LOC, and lost all control of her bodily functions. Please, any one with any help. At this point I am desperate.
