Trade Center 'Dust'

I have a file box that is in the dust in an office so near Ground Zero that it is currently off limitsand for an indefinite period of time.  I live in a region of the country far from that area.  What precautions, if any, should be considered before shipping the box to me once it is accessible?  Should it be shipped at all if I can find another way to duplicate the needed files, even though it would be difficult?  I am thinking of the obvious, e.g. asbestos dust, anthrax, and other possible biological contamination given the horrific circumstances that created the "dust".  I am concerned, of course, about my personal safety, but more importantly, with bringing something from one region of the country and introducing it into the environment of another region.
Thank you in advance for your response.

We're sorry that we have not been able to get back to you sooner. There are several issues that you have raised:
1. What is the danger of going through the files from the nonbiologic hazards? From a limited exposure, there is little risk. You might want to examine the files in an open environment, such as an outside porch, initially to allow the dust to be distributed into the air. Those people at risk for problems from these particles need a significant exposure in both time and amount.
2. What is the danger of going through the files from the biologic hazards? While there is no way that you can have 100% assurance regarding this exposure, there have been no reported instances of biohazardous materials encountered as a result of the tragedy at the WTC.
3. Should someone simply copy the files? It appears that you have concerns about exposure to the contents of the file box. This decision is one you and your company will have to discuss and decide.
Good luck
