Vocal Nodules Caused By Dust Mite Allergies?

by Shinie, Feb 01, 2006 12:00AM
Hi, I went to see an otolarynologist today about my weak voice problem. After putting an endoscope down one of my nostril, he diagnosed me as having vocal nodules on my vocal chords. He advised me to continue taking my nasal spray, Nasonex (that is used to control nasal inflamation (inflammation) from my dust mites allergy problem) and also to inhale, twice a day, the steam of half a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil with boiling water, while a towel is wrapped around my face.

Now, on to my question. The otolarynologist never really told me what caused my vocal nodules, so I had to check online. I found that misuse and abusive bahaviour of the voice are the most common problems. I'm not so sure about misusing my voice, but I don't really think I have abused my voice (i don't talk a lot, and I don't usually talk loud at all). My weak voice problem has been with me all my life, as far as I can remember, and I'm wondering whether it could be possible that my vocal nodules are caused by my reoccuring allergy to dust mites.

So, my question really is: could it be possible that allergy to dust mites can cause growth of nodules on my vocal chords?

Thank you.

As you have stated the most common reasons for vocal cord nodules are misuse and abuse of the voice.  This is a common problem for professional singers.  It has also been suggested that these can come after a viral infection.  These nodules have not been described as being due to allergies.  So it is not likely that your allergy to dust mites has caused the growth of nodules on your vocal cords.

I'd say definitely possible. I have a similar allergy problem that makes it extremely hard to talk. I strain and clear my throat all day long just to get 4 words out. No nodules yet, but the doc told me that my misuse, due to allergies, could potentially cause them.
