Waking up out of breath/oversleeping

by Demetrium, Aug 22, 2006 12:00AM
Hi, I have a problem where a lot of the time when I wake up I feel out of breath with with almost a strange pain in my gut. The pain in my gut doesn't really hurt as much as I feel like I've slept on my stomache in a way that I've compressed it causing a breathing problem, and it can take up to a half hour for my stomache to get back to normal. I also have some sort of undiagonosed sleeping disorder where if I don't set an alarm clock or have anything important to wake up for I'll get around 12 hours of sleep, sometimes even more. I'm thinking these two problems might be connected. I'm 21 and weigh roughly 185lbs.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/input.

This strongly suggests that you have a sleep disorder, specifically obstructive sleep apnea.  The strange pain in your gut is probably from struggling to breathe over and over during the night.

You definitely should ask your doctor to arrange for a sleep study in an accredited sleep laboratory.  If you are overweight at 185 lbs, you should try to lose weight.  Please read our obstructive sleep apnea information at http://www.nationaljewish.org/disease-info/diseases/sleep/treatments/obstructive-apnea.aspx to learn more.
