What are these lumps?

by jewlies, Oct 18, 2003 12:00AM
In the back of my mouth, near my tonsils there are little white-ish lumps.(i guess you could call them lumps). I took a Q-tip and got one out one time and it smelled really foul, almost like vomit, and broke apart as if it was a piece of food that had been stuck there for a while. They usually make it painful to swallow, but not always. You can see it sort of stuck to the side of my tonsil in the back of my mouth. And if i get one out, soon enough another one sort of "apears" there in about a week or two.
they are about the size of pea. Please help me,What are they?

There are different possible answers to your question.

1. This could be a "pocket" near the tonsil where food collects, but is not infected.
2. This could be an active infection in a "pocket".
3. This could be an abscess.

I would suggest seeing your family doctor who can figure this out by either looking at the back of your throat or performing a culture of the material.

One possibility is a cheese-like gunk that sometimes accumulates in little pockets in the tonsils. A cough can dislodge this and bring it up. This accumulation can be a source of bacteria and debris and cause recurrent tonsillitis.

Try searching the internet for terms like tonsil stone, tonsilloliths (alternate spelling tonsillith) and tonsil calculus.
