Why do I have a wheeze on the left side and an enlarged lymph node?

by Netty89, Sep 14, 2009 04:16AM
Around 10 months ago I came down with what the doctors called 'acute bronchitis', I had never experienced anything like it before and for 6 weeks I had a severe cough that would keep me up all night.  It took 2 courses of antibiotics to finally fight off the infection, however what I was left with was an enlarged lymph node on the left side of my neck and a wheeze that are both still with me now.  I was told the wheeze was probably a result of airway hypersensitivity following the acute infection,  I was then given a brown inhaler and told to take it twice a day for a month.  I was still using the inhaler 9 months later and only stopped 1 month ago, due to becoming pregnant.   I am not wheezing as much as I was in the winter months, however the inhaler masked a cycle/pattern that I am now experiencing - I develop a wheeze every 2 or 3 days (on my left side) and the only way it is relieved is by coughing up a small bit of mucus (this can take a number of hours), my airways then feel clear for a couple of days and then the cycle starts again.  I have had 2 chest x rays in the last 10 months and both were clear.  My doctor has now arranged a CT scan but this is not for a few months.  I am particularly anxious there may be some form of obstruction of the airway, as my symptoms are not asthmatic and the wheeze seems to be caused by a mucus plug.  If there was a growth in my airways would I have other symptoms by now and wouldn't it have show up on a chest x ray?  As I mentioned, I also have an enlarged lymph node on my neck (around 1.8cm) that I have had for the same period of time (10 months).  This has been monitored by an ENT and they have not yet advised me to have it removed (I have had 2 ultrasound scans that show it hasn't grown and a fine needle biopsy that came back clear - although I know this is not necessarily accurate).  I am extremely worried about both issues, particularly now I am pregnant and feel very nervous about the next few months, especially now we are moving into winter and flu season (which for the first few months of this year, had me wheezing everyday, even with the inhaler).  Any advice would be extremely appreciated.
