You can definately have emphysema at 24!!! My brother was hospitalized for severe emphysema just after he turned 35.  We also thought that there was no way he would have this at such a young age.  The lung specialist quickly informed us that emphysema has no age.  It all depends on the amount of damage that has been done to the lungs due to smoking. ... at any age.  My brother is now 38 and has to rely on breathing treatments and medication just so that he can breath to sleep at night.  He has chest pain when he breaths deep so he normally just kind of pants to avoid the pain... very sad.   I myself quit smoking years ago but I have severe asthma (copd) and I also have pain upon breathing deeply so it could be a number of things.
