back/breathing pain

by Patty42955, Apr 04, 2008 01:02PM
For the past month I've had pain in my back in my upper right shoulder blade area.  It hurts most when I sleep on it and the past week I began to notice it hurts in that area whenever I breath deeply.  I noticed in the past couple of days that the pain is going into my neck now as well.  I made an appointment with my doctor but cannot get in until the 14th of April.  If there is a possibility of this being something serious I will try to get it looked at sooner.  What can it be?

The combination of pain in your neck and pain around your right shoulder blade could be caused by a number of conditions, including neuritis, which is inflammation of a nerve, with or without nerve compression.  However, the pain of your back and right shoulder, in response to the pressure of sleeping on it, if that is the case, and pain with a deep breath, suggests that the pain may be originating in your chest rather than in your neck.

The answer to your question, based on the progression over one month, is that waiting another week will probably not make a difference, whether it proves to be serious or not.  However, if these pains are interfering with your daily activities and/or resulting in a loss of sleep, or have worsened since you posted your question, it would be prudent for you not to wait until the 14th but to convey the possible seriousness of this to your doctor's staff and strongly request an earlier appointment this week.  If that is not possible, you should seek examination and a chest x-ray at the nearest urgent care center or emergency room.
